Any woman who’s had a mastectomy can tell you that traditional breast prosthetics are usually expensive, heavy, sweaty and uncomfortable. They typically require special bras or camisoles with pockets and can’t be worn for weeks after surgery.
Knitted Knockers on the other hand are soft, comfortable, beautiful and when placed in a regular bra they take the shape and feel of a real breast. They are special handmade breast prosthesis for women who have undergone mastectomies or other procedures to the breast.
KNITTED KNOCKERS is an organization whose mission is to connect volunteer knitters and crocheters with breast cancer survivors to provide them with Knitted Knockers (knit or crochet breast forms).
From Big Boobs to Small!
Knitted Knockers offers several approved patterns that have been found to result in wonderful soft, contoured knockers.
Knockers are needed in a variety of sizes and colors, but must be crafted from approved free patterns and approved yarns (yarns are selected with an eye towards allergens and comfort for the survivors). Our 100% mercerized cotton Cotton Classic Lite yarn is on the approved list. However it is being discontinued. We still have many colors in stock. We will be stocking another approved yarn soon!
Please note that only knockers made from these approved patterns and approved yarns will be used for distribution of knockers at knittedknockers.org.
Bottoms Up Knitted Knockers
Knitters suggested a new and easier way to knit the Knitted Knockers from the bottom up so that you don’t have to start with a very small number of stitches, using a set of 7-8” double point needles, size US 4(5). Remember to use only Sport or (DK) weight soft, washable non wool yarn.Click HERE to download the free Bottoms Up Knitted Knockers pattern.
Knockers can be donated around the United States and internationally, so check the website to see if there’s a participating facility local to you!
How to donate your Knitted Knockers
Connecting with hospitals, doctors offices and clinics is a good way to distribute knockers in your own community. The doctors offices in our area embrace them totally. They call and request more as needed. If you need a reference to help get your foot in the door Knitted Knockers can help with that.
